Migraines - When your brain feels like it might explode.

Thursday - August 9, 2012

Have you ever felt like you brain is being fried in the Mojave desert in mid August AND being shot by Mr. Penguins freeze ray gun all at the same time? Migraines - No real answers to why people get them and of course there is no cure. And triggers, ooooooh well just about anything! This is taken from Bing Health:

Migraine headache triggers
Whatever the exact mechanism of the headaches, a number of things may trigger them. Common migraine triggers include:

Hormonal changes in women. Fluctuations in estrogen seem to trigger headaches in many women with known migraines. Women with a history of migraines often report headaches immediately before or during their periods, when they have a major drop in estrogen. Others have an increased tendency to develop migraines during pregnancy or menopause. Hormonal medications — such as oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy — also may worsen migraines, though some women find it's beneficial to take them.

Foods. Some migraines appear to be triggered by certain foods. Common offenders include alcohol, especially beer and red wine; aged cheeses; chocolate; aspartame; overuse of caffeine; monosodium glutamate — a key ingredient in some Asian foods; salty foods; and processed foods. Skipping meals or fasting also can trigger migraine attacks.

Stress. Stress at work or home can instigate migraines.Sensory stimuli. Bright lights and sun glare can induce migraines, as can loud sounds. Unusual smells — including pleasant scents, such as perfume, and unpleasant odors, such as paint thinner and secondhand smoke — can also trigger migraines.

Changes in wake-sleep pattern. Either missing sleep or getting too much sleep may serve as a trigger for migraines in some individuals, as can jet lag.Physical factors. Intense physical exertion, including sexual activity, may provoke migraines.Changes in the environment. A change of weather or barometric pressure can prompt a migraine.

Medications. Certain medications can aggravate migraines, especially oral contraceptives and vasodilators, such as nitroglycerin.

So what your telling me is I'm screwed...

How I spend a day with a migraine.

I have been a sufferer for 15 years. I've tried all the pills, patches, herbs, and natural healing there is available. One thing you will find out real quick about me is I think doctors are the biggest BSers in the world! Their educated guess make me ill. I don't believe much of what they tell me, but I go to them with the attitude that I will try anything once. The only thing that has helped to calm down the intensity and frequentness of them is acupuncture and of course they are only bearable with pain killers. I still have to be in a quite, cool and dark place to take the edge off when they are really bad.

Since I started acupuncture over a year ago, I only get them just before aunt flow comes to visit. It use be once a week for 2 or 3 days! Oh and don't get me started about being pregnant and having them. For most women they go away while they are pregnant, not me! They get ten times worse for me.

I actually attended a 3 hours class to help me understand them better only to find out my case was one of the worse of the 30 people in the class. Mine don't respond to any of the meds made specifically for migraines. I see a chiropractor once every other week, that seem to help too, but not drastically. It's not easy being a mom and having these. As if kids screaming isn't already hard enough to deal with, try hearing it ringing inside you head for hours, long after they have stopped screaming!

Me with a migraine.

So I'm curious if any of my followers suffer from them and what you do or take to get rid of them?

  1. Just found you through FB, I too have migraines. Mine started @ 19yrs old and I am now, I hate to say mid 50's. I take 5 pills daily to control mine and I still get small ones through the week that I can handle with oral pain meds. I cannot take any of the new meds on the market (imitrex, etc). When I do get a bad headache I vomit for at least 12hours and I need to get an injection for pain. I hear when you get older it gets better, I wonder how old. Lol. I am always interested in hearing from people who have the same problem as I do. My headaches are hereditary, both of my parents and my sister have them, so does my son. Does any of your children have headaches?
    Thanks,
    Amy

  2. Well thanks for following Amy. Man I thought I had it bad. These things suck! My brother has just recently started complaining about getting them. He's 25 so it started later for him. It started when I was 17 and pregnant with my son. My son complains of headaches every now and then, but not enough to make me think he's getting them. A friend of mine told me today, oddly enough as I have one today, that dried seaweed is supposed to help... I'm going to buy a pack tomorrow and start snackin... I will let you know how it goes. He's a nature guru and said one of the natural vitamins in womens bodies, drops around "that time" and the seaweed has whatever it is to build it back up. Well see how it goes! <3 Alice
