Nursing Quandary

My third baby...

Longest I've made it nursing...

Not long enough...

My first baby I made it to six months, but when he got teeth and started biting, I was done. I was young and it was easy to give up. My second baby, I made it three months, I was stressed out from my divorce and my milk stopped coming in. So this baby is eight months, TODAY in fact,

and we are still nursing... kinda.

My plan was to go til she was a year or little longer depending how it was going. However, let me state up front I am not one of those mom that will nurse a child asking for "booby mommy booby." I guess that's cool, but all the kids I know that nursed til they were 5 are weirdo adults now! Anyway, I wanted to be the one to choose this time, mature and slowly ween her. Wishful thinking?

Pulling my hair!
About two months ago I found out I had a clogged milk duct and got mastitis. The infection went away, but the clog never did, so it's still very painful to nurse on the left side. But I pushed through and decided to keep nursing. Then about 3 weeks ago she started a habit I'm not sure I can keep living with, pinching!

She kneads at me like a cat!

I have tears in my flesh from her ever growing nails!

And a thumb sucker!
I trim her nails, she still seems to rip me apart. I put mittens on her, that is if they are close by. I flick her hand and tell her "no pinching" and she laughs at me! And now as of late when I hold her arm down, she has started biting me! So not only is she clawing my boobs to death, but now she's attempting to bite my nipple off! Oh did I mention she has teeth!

So I have been pretty distraught over nursing her because I know it's going to be a battle. I didn't want to make the switch to bottles, but slowly that's been happening. For a moment I thought about giving up completely but I really do like it and not to mention it's extremely convenient at 3 am when I'm half alive!

So I have decided to do half and half. During the day I'm doing bottles, since thats when she is most feisty and at night I'll still nurse. It makes it easier too that she's eating baby food three times a day as well. So for now I can proudly say I haven't completely given up!

  1. Starting to bite on purpose and messing around while nursing were the cues Lily gave me that she was done (at 15 months). See how often she really still "wants" to nurse, and if she's not interested, leave it..

    1. She's trying to suck on my arm as I type, I'm pretty sure she still wants it. Now you see why I'm so distraught.

  2. I had a few of those. I am an advocate of nursing as long as its still working for both of you. If its not, and nursing is actually coming between your bond then it's time to leave it. No one is going to judge you for nursing or not. It doesn't have to be all or nothing either.
No matter what you do, you have a cheerleader (or a few). Good Luck!
